Three people were killed this past Sunday when a wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle on Interstate 5 in the city of Commerce. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the deadly crash occurred at 5:22 a.m. just south of Slauson Avenue. The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver of a Mini Cooper was heading south in the northbound lanes when the car struck a white van.
Very few details regarding the collision were immediately available. The Mini Cooper reportedly entered the freeway near Slauson Avenue driving in the wrong direction prior to the crash. All three victims, the male driver of the Mini Cooper and the female driver and male passenger in the van were pronounced dead at the scene. Footage from the scene showed both vehicles had overturned and the rescue crews were working to recover the victim’s bodies using the Jaws of Life.
An investigation is still ongoing in order to determine all the factors that contributed to this fatal crash. The identities of everyone involved were not immediately released. It is unclear what caused the driver of the Mini Cooper to go into the opposite lane. A three-mile stretch of the interstate, from just before Paramount Boulevard to after Slauson Avenue, was shut down until 10:30 a.m. as crews cleared the scene.
