Two people died and three others were injured this past Saturday after a six-vehicle crash in the city of Cerritos. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the 605 Freeway at the 91 Freeway interchange. CHP Officer Alex Rubio stated that two or three of the six vehicles may have originally collided and caused others to crash.
Authorities are still determining the cause of the accident. An unidentified man who was traveling in a 1999 Saturn was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP identified Gabriela Hernandez, 24, of Huntington Beach, as the other victim killed in the collision. She sustained major blunt trauma and later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Both individuals who died may have survived the initial crash but were struck after getting out of their vehicles.
The driver of the 2007 Honda in which Hernandez was a passenger was identified as Ulises Rodriguez, 32. Rodriguez suffered laceration injuries to his legs. Another passenger in that vehicle, Yenit Esquivel Rivera, 30, fractured her nasal bone. Amy Johnson, 36, of Lakewood, sustained a superior sternal fracture after her vehicle became involved in the accident.
An investigation is still ongoing in order to determine all the factors that contributed to this fatal collision. Video captured at the scene shows one of the vehicles appearing to catch fire and other vehicles rolling over on their sides. Officers said that speed and alcohol could have played a role in the incident. The CHP’s Santa Fe Springs office asked anyone with any information regarding the crash to call them at 562-868-0503.
