According to a recent report by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), working in a nursing home or residential care facility can be hazardous because of slip and fall accidents, which cause 15 percent of all accidental deaths in the U.S., second only to car accidents. OSHA estimates that nursing home employees miss work at a rate that is 2.3 times higher than all other private industry businesses combined.
OSHA has made nursing home facilities the target of a national emphasis program, which means the agency will now be inspecting these businesses for safety violations over the next 3 years. OSHA also will be keeping tabs on all types of businesses for slips, trips and falls.
Dirty and/or wet walking surfaces are the main causes of preventable accidents. Safety-minded businesses are starting to include commercial floor mat systems to help prevent slips and falls.
The most effective floor mat systems consist of placing scraper mats with raised rubber cleats outside entrances to remove heavy dirt and moisture first, and then placing carpet-topped walk-off mats inside entrances to trap any residual dirt and moisture. Placing walk-off mats in all heavy traffic areas inside helps contain soiling and moisture even further.
Businesses that do not take precautions could be liable for injuries that result from slip and fall accidents. Premise liability laws protect employees and people who are walking inside a business and/or on the property. The owner of a business is responsible for keeping his or her property safe for others to walk around.
It’s important to note that nursing homes are not the only places where slip and fall accidents can occur, e.g. department stores, grocery stores, public buildings, etc.
If you or someone you love has been involved in a slip and fall accident, you should consult an experienced attorney to see if you have grounds for an injury lawsuit. Note, the time you have to file a lawsuit is limited, so it’s to your benefit to not delay.
