Oracle’s chief executive Larry Ellison has spent quite a bit of time in court. While running Oracle, the world’s No. 1 business database provider, Ellison sued SAP AG for copyright infringement and won a $1.3 billion verdict last year.
Oracle is also engaged in a fight against Google over patents for Java programming language.
Ellison recently found himself in court again, this time as a jury foreman in a slip and fall case.
The outspoken billionaire sat through a slip and fall case brought by Elisa Miramontes and her husband against a car dealership in Half Moon Bay, California.
Miramontes said that she got out of her car and slipped on diesel fuel on the pavement and suffered injuries, according to her slip and fall lawsuit.
Slip and Fall Settlement
After a few days of trial in San Mateo County, the jury awarded over $300,000 for medical damages, plus additional economic loss and pain and suffering awards, according to a court filing. The total slip and fall settlement for Miramonte couple came to just over $472,000.
Ellison was reported to be an attentive juror who did not try to get out of serving. During the slip and fall trial, Ellison revealed that he had sustained some sports injuries, making the plaintiff’s lawyer decide to keep Ellison on the panel.
Slip and Fall Law
Slip and fall injuries are covered by a part of the law called “premises liability.” The owner or renter of property is responsible for keeping it safe. If the owner or renter knowingly creates a dangerous situation or allows a dangerous situation on the property without making a reasonable effort to fix it, they can be held liable if someone slips and falls.
