The "Killing Fields" of California Train Accidents! Hire A Good Los Angeles Lawyer

Planada, California is home to about 4,000 residents separated by railroad tracks. Cesar E. Chavez Middle School is on one side of the tracks. A medical clinic, two markets, a post office, a park, an elementary school and a high school are on the other.

Every day many Planada residents walk and drive across the tracks as they go about their daily lives. However, those trips have become deadly. Steven Miller, a 23-year-old man, was recently hit by an Amtrak train while he was chasing down a runaway dog. A week before, a 41-year-old man was killed as he drove over a private railroad crossing between Arboleda and Plainsburg roads.

More Train Track Accidents

These fatal train accidents are only the most recent tragedies to occur on railroad tracks in the Planada area. The death of a 10-year-old boy who was killed while walking near the tracks in 2006 still haunts many residents.

Law enforcement has conducted railroad crossing stings, using officers in the air and on the ground to spot people crossing the tracks illegally. One sting in 2006 resulted in 15 citations over a four-hour period. Operation Lifesaver has sent volunteers to provide rail safety presentations to schools, clubs and other organizations.

California Train Accident Prevention

Another problem may be the transportation needs of Planada residents. The MercedSunStar says that the Merced County government should work with the civic leaders on Planada’s municipal advisory council to figure out why so many people are crossing the railroad tracks illegally.

While education and awareness are admirable, sometimes they are not enough, especially if there has been clear negligence by train operators, local governments or state authorities. Railroad tracks must be clearly marked and provide adequate warning, day and night, to pedestrians and drivers. It would be a mistake to blame all railroad traffic accidents on “illegal crossings.”
