The driver of a speeding car reportedly lost control of his vehicle on Highway 18, near Lake Arrowhead, California, crossed the center divider and hit another car which triggered a five-car accident. The multi-car crash backed up traffic in both directions and closed the highway for one hour. No citations or arrests had been made, but the accident investigation is continuing.
CHP officers said Luis Uribe was driving a red 1990 Honda Civic at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle. His Honda crossed into oncoming traffic and smashed into the left front of a silver 2000 Volvo S70 that was driven in the left lane by Joseph Bonier.
Car Crash Report
The force of the impact pushed Bonier’s car into another lane where a third driver, Alberto Carrillo, in a white 1994 Toyota pickup truck, collided with the rear of Bonier’s Volvo. Then a fourth car, a black 2007 Honda CRV, driven by Natalie Wolfe, swerved to avoid the car crash, but struck Carrillo’s pickup truck with the left front of her car.
Finally, Bryan Thomas, driving a silver 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, saw the collision and tried to avoid it, but the initial impact forced Uribe’s car back into the upbound lanes, and Thomas’ car struck it in the left rear.
Car Crash Injuries
Private ambulances transported Uribe and his passenger, 19-year-old Kassandra Chambers, to Loma Linda University Medical Center. A county fire department paramedic ambulance took Bonier to the same hospital.
Uribe’s injuries were described as major, while Chambers and Bonier sustained moderate injuries, said Crest Forest Fire Protection District Chief Michael Sherman.
Witnesses said Uribe’s car was moving at a high rate of speed, but the CHP said that it was not immediately clear whether the vehicle had been altered to make it go faster. Uribe’s car and Bonier’s Volvo were extensively damaged and were towed from the scene, while the other three vehicles were driven away.
