A 10-year-old boy was left with significant injuries to his face after a vicious dog bite attack by his neighbor’s pit bull on the 3400 block of Citrus Street in El Rio, California. The boy was on a bicycle at 8:30 a.m. when a large brown pit bull, that weighed around 100 pounds, came out of a yard and attacked him.
The dog knocked the boy off the bike and bit him on the face. As the boy was lying on the ground, the dog backed off, giving him a chance to get away and run to his cousin’s house for safety. The boy was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center and was, later, transferred to Kaiser Permanente.
After the Dog Bite Injury
The dog’s owner told deputies that the dog was secured in the backyard. At that point, deputies said the dog came out again, but was not aggressive toward them. The owner grabbed the dog and placed it in a patrol car. Animal control then put the dog into quarantine to prevent anymore dog bite attacks.
The dog, a male named Ross, will be held for quarantine for 10 days, said Denise Callaway, supervising animal control officer. Callaway said there are many factors that play into what happens next, such as whether the victim wants to file a nuisance report or if the dog’s owner wants the dog back.
Dog Bite Statute
California dog bite statute 3342 states: “The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.”
