Illegal Street Racing Causes Motorcycle Accident

A 25-year-old man stationed at Travis Air Force Base was critically injured in a motorcycle accident in Fairfield, California. Police say that he crashed his motorcycle during an illegal street race. The man, whose name was not released, was headed north on Peabody Road near Waterworks Lane at about 1:10 a.m. when a police officer happened to see him and a silver car speed by.

The officer estimated the motorcyclist was driving above 100 mph and began to pull into the roadway to initiate a traffic stop. But before the officer could pursue them, the motorcyclist lost control and crashed into a sign post just as the road narrowed from two lanes to one. The car, which may have been an Acura, continued speeding and did not stop.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The officer stopped to provide first aid the motorcyclist, who was taken by ambulance to Vaca Valley Hospital. He was then airlifted to the University of California, Davis Medical Center. Investigators believe the two vehicles might have been illegally street racing. Alcohol did not appear to have been a factor in the motorcycle’s crash.

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were eight fatalities and 615 injuries involving vehicle accidents in Fairfield. In Solano County as a whole, 33 people died and 1,735 were injured as a result of vehicle accidents during the same year.
