Our eyes provide the visual framework that allows our brains to decipher the location of objects both nearby, and far away. While driving on the road, individuals depend on their complex system of nerve connections in their eyes to help focus in on oncoming objects and to help navigate the road. In a car accident, the eyes are particularly vulnerable to injuries that may have long lasting impacts on the quality of life of an individual.

In particular, an individual usually sustains injuries to their eyes due one of two factors: air bag deployment and flying debris. Flying debris is the most common factor that results in eye injuries, and for good reason. In a car accident, depending on the severity of the impact, debris will be flying freely inside the passenger cabin, increasing the chances that an independent piece of debris will get lodged in your eye. Objects such as glass from the windshield may become lodged in the eye, creating serious injuries with far reaching implications. Injuries to the eyes may result in something as small as minor discomfort in the affected area to far more complicated injuries that have permanent repercussions on an individual’s ability to see. Eye injuries may also be sustained as a result of the deployment of an airbag. Although airbags are put in place to protect a driver and their passengers from serious bodily harm, they may also inadvertently cause problems to the individuals in the car as well. These types of injuries occur when an airbag deploys rapidly and comes in contact with an eye. To deploy fast enough to prevent bodily harm to the individual, particles are launched within the airbag that cause them to fly around and expand the airbag compartment. If the rapidly expanding airbag comes in contact with the eye, then it may cause significant to serious trauma to the affected area. Although the trauma may only be temporary, it is often the case that the damage induced on the eye is permanent.

To mitigate any problems that may arise from an airbags deployment, it is critical that a manufacturer’s instructions be followed to their exact recommendations. If you have further questions regarding proper safety as it relates to eye injuries, do not hesitate to call the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi. Furthermore, if you or a loved one has been involved in an accident, you may be entitled to compensation by the insurance companies, in which case please feel free to call us at 310-277-7529 or 1-800-890-7375.

Some of our recent blog entries have highlighted new movements in Los Angeles to create a community that is more pedestrian friendly. As these efforts gain steam and begin to take shape, it is important that we discuss the issue of crosswalk accidents. Even if you, a pedestrian, has the right of way and is obeying all the traffic laws, you may still be susceptible to the inept and reckless driving of an individual that may ultimately put your life at risk. It is estimated that there are about 5,000 pedestrian fatalities per year as a result of an impact with a motor vehicle. Furthermore, an additional 70,000 pedestrians are injured every year.

There are two instances that put pedestrians most at risk when crossing sidewalks: drivers making right hand turns and drivers making left hand turns. When a driver is making a right hand turn, they are usually only taking the time to look to their left for any oncoming traffic. This means that they will look left and then make the right turn without taking the time to inspect the environment to their right, which could put a pedestrian crossing the street at risk. If you begin walking the crosswalk at the unfortunate time that a driver was looking to his left, you may become the victim of an accident caused by a lack of caution on the driver’s part. Similarly, drivers making unprotected left turns are usually only paying attention to oncoming traffic, checking the appropriate time that they may safely make the left turn. Often times the distraction of oncoming traffic makes drivers unaware of crossing pedestrians, a risk that only helps to increase the amount of accidents that take place on cross walks.

Injuries sustained by crosswalk incidents should not be taken lightly and you should immediately seek medical help after a car accident to ensure that no long term damage has been caused. As Los Angeles continues to move forward with its efforts to increase pedestrian traffic, more individuals will be subjected to risks as they relate to motor mobile accidents. If you or a loved one has been involved in a pedestrian accident, you may be entitled to compensation beyond what you were originally offered.

The human back contains an extensive system of nerves, muscles, and bones that help provide the backbone of support for the human body. This support system, one of the most important in the human body, allows for the facilitation of the mechanical performance of our muscles and is essential in protecting and providing the link to the central nervous system. Due to the far reaching implications on an individual’s health, the spine is a critical aspect of the human body that thus needs to be protected at all costs.

Unfortunately, spinal injuries are one of the most common injuries suffered in car accidents. One such injury, a herniated disk, occurs when an impact causes an individual’s discs on their spine to become deformed or ruptured. These discs, which help cushion the vertebrae from one another and provide flexibility, can no longer provide the necessary support which ultimately results in pain, numbness, and weakness in parts of the body. Lower back disc injuries frequently lead to scaitca, a condition characterized by shooting pain, numbness, and tingling in the leg and/or buttock on either side.

Beyond injuring the discs that protect the vertebrae, the impact resulting from an accident may also cause significant damage to the spinal cord. The spinal cord, which is a bundle of nerves connected to the central nervous system, is our bodies way of communicating with our brains. Depending on the severity of the blow suffered by the spine, the individual may suffer from total paralysis or from incomplete paralysis where some sensation and movement is still possible. In regards to spinal injuries, the location of the injury on the spine correlates to the area that will be affected by the injury. Generally speaking, the higher an injury is on the spine, the more the body will be affected. Typically, an injury to the lower or middle of the spine will affect the legs (parapeligia) whereas an injury that affects the upper spine will result in impairment of both the legs and the arms (quadriplegia).

Back injuries should not be taken lightly and you should immediately seek medical help after a car accident to ensure that no damage has been caused to the spine. Although a spine injury may start off as only a minor annoyance, it can develop into a severe, long-term problem that causes unwanted pain and suffering. If you or a loved one has been involved in a road accident, and sustained spinal cord injuries, you may be entitled to compensation beyond what you were originally offered. Feel free to call the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi at 310-277-7529 or 1-800-890-7375, where one of our esteemed lawyers may help you receive the just compensation you deserve.

“Loss of Use” may refer to various different types of insurance. Loss of use, as it relates to car insurance, refers to the coverage an individual receives from their insurance company so as to mitigate the “loss of use” of their vehicle after a car accident. This means that if an individual has an insurance policy that covers loss of use, that they will be compensated if they lose access to their vehicle due to an accident, theft, vandalism, or other sort of damage. While your car is being fixed, your insurance policy will thus cover your car rentals or other sorts of transportation. This type of insurance is critical if you depend on your car for your livelihood, and this type of insurance can give you peace of mind that you will be able to complete your daily duties without any problems.

Loss of use may also be used to refer to the compensation that a worker may be entitled too if they loss the ability to control a body part. Under workers compensation law, an employer must provide monetary benefits and compensation for an employee who loses their ability to control a particular body part, such as: an arm, hand, finger, leg, foot, or toe.

Finally, loss of use is also used in the discussion of property law. Under property laws, almost any form of property may be subject to loss of use. This includes everything from real estate to the inability to drive your car due to damages. Under these laws, the individual is entitled to some form of compensation that will mitigate the “loss of use” of their property.

If you or a loved one has any further questions regarding “loss of use” or other insurance policies, feel free to call the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi where one of our esteemed lawyers may further explain the issue to. You may reach us at 310-277-7529 or 1-800-890-7375.

The State of California requires that all motorists have their cars insured, which would lead you to believe that all cars on the road would be covered by some form of insurance. As it turns out, upwards of 20% of all cars in California are uninsured, meaning that there are thousands of Californians driving on the road that have no form of coverage if they get in a car accident.

You may be asking yourself, “Why do I care if some other driver doesn’t have insurance but I do?”. The fact of the matter is that if you are involved in an ccident, and the other driver does not have insurance, then you may never receive the full fiscal and physical compensations that come with coverage. You may be left paying your own medical and mechanical bills, as well as covering any lost wages that you may have had to forgo. Uninsured motorist insurance will be able to cover these expenses in situations in were you are not legally responsible for the car accident and the other driver is either uninsured or underinsured. In uninsured motorist is just that, an individual that has absolutely no coverage on their car protecting them from any possible damages they may incur on other vehicles. In underinsured motorist, on the other hand, is an individual who has only the most basic coverage that covers only the limit of their legal financial responsibility. This is a problem when the coverage of the individual is not high enough to cover all of the damages caused by the accident. In these cases, having uninsured motorist insurance will help cover the expenses that the other individual is unable to cover.

The State of California, and the country as a whole, is still recovering from the economic collapse in 2007/2008, which have led many people to cut out their car insurances from their fiscal budgets. As a result, an ever increasing amount of uninsured motorists have hit the road, putting individuals at risk if they so happen to get in a car accident. By attaining uninsured motorist insurance, you can have the peace of mind that you will be covered in an accident, no matter what. If you or a loved one has further questions regarding uninsured motorist insurance or has been involved in a car accident, do not hesitate to call one of our lawyers at the Law Offices of Arash Khorsandi at 310-277-7529 or 1-800-890-7375.

The head is one of the most sensitive and vulnerable parts of the body, its ability to function properly critical to our well being. That being said, the importance of a healthy brain is often overlooked and forgotten about, its health tossed aside as individuals focus on other aspects of their well being. The brain though, and the surrounding regions, should not be toyed with and it is critical that, in the case of a car accident, you properly have yourself checked by a doctor for any possible damage.

If you are involved in a car accident, major or minor, it is possible that you have received some form of head trauma. A brain injury may be mild, such as a concussion that eventually heals over a period of time, or it may be severe to the point that basic motor functions are affected. In either case, the damage received by an individual may be invisible to the naked eye and may need further investigation by a medical professional to determine the damage inflicted.

Whiplash is often a byproduct of car accidents both small and big. Whiplash occurs after a sudden jerk or “whipping” of the head, strains the soft tissues of the neck preventing their normal range of motion. The symptoms of whiplash include: pain and aches in the neck and back region, reflective pain in the shoulders, sensory disturbance (pins and needles) in the arms and legs, and headaches. Although these symptoms may be felt immediately, it may take a few days for them to come on. It is critical that if you or a loved one experiences any symptoms of whiplash that you have a health care professional examine you, so as to provide you with a proper treatment plan. Even though whiplash may only be a minor inconvenience, in some cases a severe form of whiplash may disable you from properly living your life.

If you have further questions regarding proper safety as it relates to head trauma, do not hesitate to call the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi. Furthermore, if you or a loved one has been involved in a vehicle accident, you may be entitled to compensation by the insurance companies, in which case please feel free to call us at 310-277-7529 or 1-800-890-7375.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recently announced publicly that they believe the blood alcohol content for drivers should not exceed .05. Currently, federal laws prohibit the driving of a motor vehicle for any person who has a BAC of .08. The NTSB supports their claim for a lower threshold of BAC by pointing to the fact that even at the now permissible level of .05, individuals show significant impairment. Furthermore, a report on Europe by the NTSB showed that over 100 European countries had adopted a BAC driving threshold of 0.05 or lower, which in turn translated to a 50% drop in drunk-driving related incidents within 10 years of applying the standard.

This proposal by the National Transportation Safety Board would mean that a woman weighing less then 120 pounds could only have one drink while a 160 pound male could have two. A drink is defined as 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof alcohol. With such a low threshold for BAC, the NTSB notes that they would not recommend anyone to drive if they have had one or two drinks.

In the past 5 years California alone has been witness to 4,652 fatalities attributed to drunk driving that have caused the state an upwards of $29 billion. The United States, in total, has had 10,228 fatalities due to drunk-driving accidents. Even more astonishing is the fact that one in three people will at some point in their life be involved in a car accident where alcohol is a factor. With this in mind, it is important to remember to always drink responsibly and have a designated driver if you plan on having more then a few drinks. In the instances in which a designated driver is not available, it is best to refrain from drinking completely or call a cab.

Even if you follow all of these guidelines, it is possible that you or a family member could inadvertently be involved in a car crash involving a drunk driver. Although these types of accidents may only be minor, more likely then not it, they sadly often cause serious injury to the party at fault and the victim. If you or a loved one have sustained injuries from a drunk-driving accident, do not hesitate to call the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi where one of our dedicated lawyers can take care of all your needs and work you through the necessary steps to receive maximum compensation.
Months of hard work and effort finally paid off for three-time council member Eric Garcetti as the results showed this morning that he handedly defeated Wendy Greuel for the Mayor position in Los Angeles. Bringing in 56% of the vote, Eric Garcetti ran away with the election late Tuesday night due to his ability to attract votes from all aspects of the Los Angeles community.

With the elections behind him, it is now interesting to see how Mayor Garcetti will tackle the plethora of issues that plague the LA community. A long ongoing problem, the horrific traffic situation in Los Angeles is something that needs to be addressed by the new mayor if he hopes to continue to keep the support that won him this election. In his campaign trail, Mayor Garcetti pointed to the fact that he had implemented the first green streets in Los Angeles as well as authoring legislation that required electric car infrastructure in commercial and multi-family developments. Furthermore, a mere 3 weeks before these elections ended, Garcetti showed his support for the development of a heavy rail project that would connect the northern reaches of the valley to LAX.

These ideas may just be wishful thinking, considering the fact that the most recent attempt to alleviate traffic, by widening the 405, is currently 1 year behind schedule. Anyone who regularly commutes within LA can tell you that the 405, and the stand still traffic that greets commuters on most days, is one of the worst aspects of living in Los Angeles. Construction on that freeway has caused even further congestion on the freeway and has diverted traffic onto already crowded streets. With an all-time high of cars on the road, it is not improbable to think that this has lead to an increase in traffic accidents, from major incidents to the smallest fender bender. If you find yourself injured from a car accident, do not hesitate to call our offices at 310-277-7529 or 1-800-890-7375.

If you ask someone what the most important factors are that determine their car’s health, many individuals would be quick to point out their oil life or mileage on their engine. Often overlooked, your car’s tire pressure is equally as important to ensuring your safety on the road. A car’s tire pressure is often forgotten about in the daily routine of maintenance, but this act of negligence could prove to be fatal in the long run. Since many cars on the road are either to old or still do not present tire pressure information to the driver, individuals can drive for long periods of time on deflated tires that increase the chance of car accidents.

In a 2012 study presented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), they showed by using crash data from 2005-2007 that 5% of all crashes involved vehicles with tire problems. Furthermore, the NHTSA showed that a vehicle with underinflated tires was 3 times more likely to be involved in a crash related to car problems. Assuming that there are around 5.25 million car crashes a year, this means that a staggering 262,500 were related to tire problems.

To ensure your tires are functioning at optimal capacity, it is critical to do daily observations of your tires to check for any signs of deflation. In cars that are equipped with sensors to detect tire pressure, these sensors usually appear once a tire(s) fall 25% below the recommended level. You should be aware of the recommended tire pressure that the manufacture requires, which will be in the form of pounds per square inch or PSI. If you are unable to check your tire pressures when needed, it is advisable that you get your car immediately checked by a knowledge friend or family member, or have a mechanic help you out.

If you have further questions regarding proper safety as it relates to tire pressure, do not hesitate to call the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi. Furthermore, if you or a loved one has been involved in an automobile accident, you may be entitled to compensation by the insurance companies, in which case please feel free to call us at 310-277-7529 or 1-800-890-7375.

Every year, thousands of children are seriously injured or killed in automobile accidents that could have ultimately been avoided had a car seat been utilized. The safety of one’s own children should be at the forefront of any family’s considerations when discussing the use of car seats. In particular, young children and babies are far more vulnerable to injury then their adult counterparts, the sensitive nature of their bodies making them extremely susceptible to bodily harm that could have far lasting repercussions. To protect the fragile body and mind of your child while in an automobile, it is critical that a car seat be used to minimize any impact that a car accident may have on the child. It is not enough to just employ the use of a car seat, but to ensure its efficacy, parents should make sure that the car seat they are using is the correct type and that it fits properly. As always, the instructions of the car seat manufacturer should be adhered by at all times to ensure the safety of your child.

Infants and toddlers under the age of 2 should always be placed in a rear-facing car seat until they surpass the height and weight limits established by the car seat manufacturer. Any child over the age of 2, or who surpasses the height and weight specifications on a rear-facing car seat, should be placed in a front-facing car seat that utilizes a harness. Booster seats that work in tandem with the car’s seat belt should be used when the child outgrows their front-facing car seat. Generally around the age of 8 to 12 years old, children are typically safe to use seat belts by themselves when they grow to be taller than 4 feet 9 inches.

Utilizing a car seat that properly fits the needs of your child is essential in preventing a catastrophe from occurring. Children hold the key to our future and it is critical that we do our part to create awareness on this issue. As caring family members, the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi are devastated when news of a child’s death, produced by the lack of use of a child seat, occurs. With this in mind, injuries to children may still occur in a automobile accident, even with the use of a proper car sear, and the Law Office of Arash Khorsandi are here to help.
