Statistics, Strict Liability and the One Bite Rule

According to a recent survey by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention there are more than 74.8 million dogs in the United States. "Jarrod's Law" Intended to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents in California With the Help of Los Angeles Lawyers

A new motorcycle accident law in California could help save the lives of many of the state’s young motorcycle riders. Known as “Jarrad’s Law,” it went into effect this past January 1st and includes strict requirements for those under the age of 21 who want to obtain a motorcycle permit.

Previously (and amazingly), anyone over the age of 17 1/2 could take a written exam and be allowed to ride a motorcycle anywhere in the state of California, except on the freeways, at night, or with a passenger.

Now anyone from age 15 1/2 to age 21 who wants to obtain a motorcycle license must first complete a 15-hour safety course given by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for $150. After the motorcycle safety course, they must pass a written test to receive a permit, which must be held at least six months to become eligible for an actual motorcycle license.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident Los Angeles

This was one of the last bills signed by former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in memory of Sacramento teen Jarrad Cole, who died tragically in a summer 2007 motorcycle accident. When the 18-year-old Cole got his new Suzuki motorcycle, his father wanted to create a learning course on their quiet suburban cul-de-sac, so he entered the garage to fetch orange cones.

Meanwhile, Cole, who was driving with only a motorcycle learner’s permit that he received after passing a written examination, somehow lost control of the bike, flew off and landed in a neighbor’s yard with fatal injuries.
