2 San Francisco Area Toddlers Suffer Dog Bite Attacks From Pit Bulls

A Castro Valley couple was placed under arrest for child endangerment last Tuesday after a second dog bite attack of a toddler in the Bay Area in a span of 24 hours, Alameda County authorities said.

The dog bite attack took place at a home in Castro Valley sometime after 2 a.m. and left the boy with severe cuts to his head. When deputies arrived, they found the house in complete disarray, and arrested the boy’s father and mother for child endangerment.

The arrests did not stem directly from the dog bite attack, but rather was related to the state of the house when deputies arrived.

While the boy’s father remained in custody at Santa Rita Jail, the mother was subsequently released so she could be hospitalized because of an injury she had sustained.

The dog, a six-year-old pit bull/German Shepard mix, was in custody of animal control under quarantine at the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin, California. The animal will remain under quarantine for 10 days to determine whether it is infected with rabies.

The boy’s injuries were serious enough to require surgery.

Meanwhile, a Concord two-year-old girl injured in last Monday’s dog bite attack was in stable condition at Children’s hospital, but faced a lengthy recovery.

Authorities said the pit bull involved in the attack had been euthanized and its tissues were being tested for rabies. According to reports, the little girl was attacked and bitten at three times by a pit bull just before 5 p.m. at a house .

The young girl suffered serious bite wounds to the face and leg and was airlifted to Oakland Children’s Hospital. While her injuries were not considered life threatening, doctors say she faces a lengthy recovery.

Authorities also continued with their investigation Tuesday, trying to determine if anyone in the family would face criminal charges. Even if the dog does not have a history of aggression, both children would have civil dog bite cases per California law.

Car Accident Blamed on Text Message Sender

Shannon Colonna was texting her friend Kyle Best when he slammed his car into a New Jersey couple, David and Linda Kubert, who were riding on a motorcycle in September of 2009.

Now a judge may hold Colonna partially responsible for the car accident and David and Linda Kubert’s severe injuries, after the couple filed a lawsuit in which they claim she knew her teenage friend was driving and texted him anyway.

The Kuberts, who both lost their left legs because of the horrific car crash, launched a public campaign against texting while driving shortly after the car accident.

Earlier this year, Best pleaded guilty to three motor vehicle charges from the car crash: Using a hand-held cellphone while driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain a lane.

He was sentenced to $775 in fines and ordered to speak about the dangers of texting and driving at local high schools.

But the Kuberts want Colonna to pay a price, too.

The couple’s car accident attorney said that while Colonna wasn’t present in the car, she was “electronically present”.

“I think any reasonable jury can determine that she had knowledge that when he text her and he said ‘I’m back’ she knew he was driving home for dinner because she spent the day with him,” their car accident lawyer said.

However, Colonna’s lawyer argued that as a text message sender, she had the right to assume her text would be read at a “safe time.”

Colonna’s lawyers filed a motion to dismiss, which the judge is supposed to rule on later this month.

Regardless of his ruling on Colonna’s role in the crash, the couple is also suing Best.

The Kuberts want Best’s insurance company to pay up for their medical costs and for the New Jersey legislature to pass a law discouraging texting while friends are driving.

New Dog Bite Law in San Luis Obispo County, California

On March 22, 2012, San Luis Obispo County resident Robin O’Hara was walking her 7-year-old, 90-pound boxer, Cassius, through her quiet Vista Robles neighborhood.

That day she saw two pit bulls staring at her and Cassius. Without warning, the pit bulls launched a vicious dog bite attack.

One dog clamped its jaws around Cassius’ neck, while the other grabbed his left hind leg. O’Hara began screaming and kicking at the attacking dogs.

Fortunately, neighbor Bob Horacek heard the dog bite attack, grabbed a shovel and said he began beating the pit bull gripping Cassius’ throat: “I hit it four or five times on the head before it let go. (The dogs) ran out and made a circle, and they would have come back, but I chased them up the hill and hit them again.”

While Horacek chased off the dogs and tracked them to their home, his wife helped O’Hara and Cassius to safety.

On Tuesday, April 10, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors approved a new dog-behavior law, which will require people who have custody of an animal, which is considered menacing or aggressive, to “immediately confine it to a secure enclosure or location” as soon as they are told the animal has violated the ordinance.

San Luis Obispo County animal control officers will be able to issue citations to the owners of “menacing” dogs and other animals that aren’t adequately contained. They do not have to wait until the dog jumps the fence or digs out of the yard and attacks.

The new ordinance enables the County to issue citations if a dog is not kept in an enclosure “of construction adequate to keep it securely confined.”

The new ordinance says that, if the owner of an aggressive or menacing animal is a renter, the landlord is also held responsible for their failure of tenants to comply with curbing aggressive actions of pets.

While it is good that the criminal laws in San Luis Obispo County are being toughened up to protect the public, dog bite victims are still protected by civil laws throughout the state of California.

82 Year Old Survives Dog Bite Attack by Two Pit Bills

82-year-old Gloria Boswell is recovering at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center after a Monday night dog bite attack by two pit bulls.

Boswell’s grandson owned one of the dogs.

Boswell said she was picking up a pillow that had fallen off the coach, the dog’s pillow.

“I reached down to pick the pillow up and that was my mistake. I had a pitbull wrapped around my neck,” said Boswell.

Boswell was bitten in the face, back and both arms and legs, said Gray’s Harbor Sheriff’s deputies.

Boswell’s grandson shot and killed one of the dogs; the other is being held in 10-day quarantine by Gray’s Harbor County.

Her daughter shudders at the thought: “I just felt sorry that I wasn’t there to help her. I close my eyes and I can hear her screaming for help and nobody’s there to help her.”

“If you want to survive, you ‘re gonna have to fight,” said Boswell, “and I wasn’t about to give up my home and my life.”

Boswell’s other daughter, Carla Inman, said this wasn’t the first time the dogs attacked: “She shouldn’t have to go through it. The dog’s bit her before. I told them to get rid of the dog when it bit her the first time and they didn’t do it. And they didn’t report it either or take her to the doctor. ”

“If I had my choice, I probably would (put the dog down), yes, to save somebody else’s life,” said Boswell.

Boswell said she doesn’t believe pit bulls are any more dangerous than other dog breeds, but she did say there’s no doubt the surviving pet needs to be destroyed.

Patrick Dempsey played a real-life action hero last week, when he used a crowbar, fire extinguisher and quick timing to pull a teenage boy to safety after a car accident near Dempsey’s Malibu, Calif., home.

“I was scared for my life. I was upside down,” driver Weston Masset, 17, told ABC News.

Masset lost control of his Mustang, which rolled over three times, trapping and leaving him barely conscious. That’s when Dempsey sprang into action.

After rescuing Masset, Dempsey called paramedics and stayed by the teen’s side along with his wife Jillian and three neighbors. Masset was airlifted to a local hospital where he was treated for a concussion and an eye injury. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Seeing TV’s Dr. Derek Shepherd standing before him at the crash site, Masset asked Dempsey, “Are you famous?” Dempsey replied: “Yeah, I’m a doctor.”

Dempsey also called Masset’s mother to apprise her of her son’s situation after the car accident.

“He had a certain authority in his voice,” said a “super-grateful” Mary Beth Masset. “I asked if he was a paramedic and he said, ‘No, this is Patrick Dempsey.’ I thought, ‘McDreamy?’ ”

Added her son, smiling through the braces on his teeth, “He was there for me. It would have been a lot worse without him.”

Dempsey’s reps declined to comment on the star’s heroics.

Several news sites are reporting that former WCW wrestler Marcus “Buff” Bagwell was involved in a car accident in Cherokee County, North Carolina, which has left him severely injured.

A wrestling spokesman told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Bagwell’s vehicle overturned repeatedly on Towne Lake Parkway on Monday night.

He was subsequently taken to the ICU unit of WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Bagwell reportedly suffered a broken neck in two places, injuries to the nose, cheek bone and jaw. Bagwell has shown signs of improvement since Monday, but remains heavily medicated, on breathing and feeding tubes

This is not the first time that Bagwell has suffered a neck injury. In 1998 Bagwell suffered damage to several vertebrae and developed spinal shock syndrome following a botched diving bulldog at the hands of Rick Steiner.

Bagwell, from Cobb County, Georgia, is best known for being in WCW from 1991 until 2001, when he was five-time World Tag Team champion. His signature move was the ‘Buff Blockbuster,’ described on his website as a “top rope somersault neck breaker.”

In March 2001, WCW was bought up by its high-profile rival WWF, and Bagwell’s contract was transferred.

Two massive pit bulls went on a dog bite rampage Friday night in Washington D.C..

Surveillance video footage (below) caught the chase on film and shows how two children tried climbing on top of a car to get away from the 190-pound dogs, who climbed on the vehicle after them.

People watched in horror from their homes and trying to distract the dogs by throwing objects out the windows, but nothing worked.

The children, whose names and ages have not been disclosed, were only able to run away when passerby Andrew Wilkis stepped in.

Wilkis was coming home from working as an usher at the Washington Nationals hockey game when he saw the dogs going after the children.

Wilkis began stabbing the dogs with his knife, that wasn’t enough to stop them from tossing Mr Wilkis around like a rag doll.

‘The dogs drug him off of the car and shook him in the street.

The dog bite fight between Wilkis and the dogs lasted 13 minutes before they eventually left the scene.

Wilkis, who was taken to a local hospital and released the next day, said: “I got bitten on the arm and I got stitches, they took some meet out between my two fingers.”

Police are still trying to track down the dogs’ owner.

One of the biggest clues is the trail of bloody paw prints that lead to an apartment where some neighbors have seen the dogs inside a window before.

No one has ever seen them outside the building before, and the dog bite attack has sent shock waves throughout the community as the dogs are still alive and possibly loose.

News Anchor Kyle Dyer Back After Televised Dog Bite

Denver television news anchor Kyle Dyer, of KUSA-TV, has returned to work more than a month after she was bitten in the face by an 85-pound Argentine mastiff. The vicious dog bite happened during a live TV segment with the dog’s owner and a firefighter who had rescued the pet from a pond.

When Dyer bent down to give the dog a kiss, the pooch tore into her face on-the-air. The news broadcast quickly cut away to a weatherman, while Dyer was attended to by medical personnel for her serious dog bite.

Dyer received 90 stitches and underwent two operations. She has V-shaped scar lines on the top of her mouth, but fortunately, Dyer no longer has difficulty talking. She said last week it may take months to get feeling back on her lips.

Dyer called the incident an” accident” and is glad the dog is home after it spent 10 days in mandatory quarantine.

While hospitalized, Dyer also underwent an unrelated hip-replacement surgery while on leave from the morning show.
